Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measure of how well the kidneys are functioning in terms of filtering waste and excess fluids from the blood. It specifically refers to the rate at which blood is filtered through the glomeruli, which are tiny structures in the kidneys responsible for the initial stage of filtration.
GFR is an important indicator of kidney function and is often used to assess the overall health of the kidneys. A decrease in GFR can be a sign of kidney dysfunction or disease. It is usually expressed in milliliters per minute (ml/min) and is commonly used to stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on its severity:
- Stage 1: GFR greater than or equal to 90 ml/min (normal or high kidney function)
- Stage 2: GFR 60-89 ml/min (mildly decreased kidney function)
- Stage 3: GFR 30-59 ml/min (moderately decreased kidney function)
- Stage 4: GFR 15-29 ml/min (severely decreased kidney function)
- Stage 5: GFR less than 15 ml/min (kidney failure)
GFR can be estimated using equations that take into account factors such as serum creatinine levels, age, gender, and race. Commonly used equations include the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation and the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation.
Regular monitoring of GFR is important for individuals with kidney disease, as it helps healthcare providers assess the progression of the condition and make informed decisions about treatment and management.
